About color tools

Color tools help you move between color formats, build palettes and check that colors work together. The Color Converter converts one color between HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK at once, which is the quickest option if you are not sure which format you need. For a specific pair, HEX to RGB, RGB to HEX, HEX to HSL and RGB to CMYK give you a focused view.

Which format to use depends on the job. HEX and RGB are common in web design, HSL is easier for adjusting lightness and saturation by hand, and CMYK is the model used in print. Screen colors do not always match print exactly, so treat CMYK values as a starting point.

For design work, the Color Palette Generator builds a 7-shade palette from a single base color, and the CSS Gradient Generator creates linear or radial gradients with a live preview. Before you settle on text and background colors, run them through the Color Contrast Checker, which tests the pair against WCAG accessibility standards. These tools run in your browser, so there is nothing to upload.

FAQ

Questions

Which color format should I use on a website?

HEX and RGB are the most widely used in CSS, and HSL is useful when you want to adjust lightness or saturation. All three describe screen colors, so you can convert between them without changing how the color looks.

Why does my CMYK color look different on screen?

Screens mix light and printers mix ink, so the two cannot match exactly. The RGB to CMYK tool gives a conversion to work from, but a printed proof is the reliable check.

What does the Color Contrast Checker test?

It checks a text and background color pair against WCAG accessibility standards. Passing means the text is easier to read for people with low vision.
