Guide

How a grid collage is built

A grid collage places several photos into one picture, each in its own equally sized cell, with a small space between them. The result is a single flat image, so it can be shared anywhere a normal picture is accepted.

This tool arranges your photos into a near-square grid. It takes the number of images, finds the square root, and rounds up to get the number of columns. Rows are then however many are needed to hold everything. Five photos, for example, become 3 columns and 2 rows, which leaves one cell empty. Every cell is a 400 by 400 pixel square, and each photo is scaled to fill its cell completely, then centered and cropped at the edges. A tall or wide photo will therefore lose some of its edges rather than being squeezed.

When a quick collage is useful

Collages are handy when you have several related pictures and only room for one: a before-and-after set, a product shown from a few angles, a trip recap, or a set of screenshots for a message. Instead of attaching a dozen files, you send one image that shows them all at a glance.

They also help when a platform allows a single upload per post or listing. A uniform grid with consistent spacing looks tidy without needing a design program, and the white background suits most documents and web pages.

How to make a collage with this tool

  1. Drop your images onto the upload area, or click it to browse. You can select several files at once, and you can add more later.
  2. Check the small thumbnails that appear. Click the red trash icon on a thumbnail to remove that photo.
  3. Drag the Gap slider (0 to 40 pixels, default 8) to set the white space between photos and around the outer edge.
  4. Click Create collage to build the picture. A preview appears above the buttons.
  5. Click Download to save it as collage.png. Use Start over to clear everything and begin again.

Photos appear in the order you added them, filling each row from left to right. Everything is drawn on your own device; the images are not uploaded.

Tips and limits to know about

The output size follows from the grid. With 5 photos and the default gap of 8, the canvas is 1232 by 824 pixels: three columns of 400 plus four gaps of 8 across, and two rows of 400 plus three gaps of 8 down. Many photos will make a large image, so a big batch can be slow on an older phone.

Because every cell is a square, non-square photos are cropped to fit. If an important part of a photo is near the edge, crop it first with the Crop Image tool so the right area stays visible. There is no option to choose a background color, change the cell size, or drag photos into a custom arrangement, and the file is always PNG.

If you remove or add photos after creating a collage, click Create collage again so the preview and download match your current selection. If you only want two or three images side by side without cropping, the Image Joiner keeps each photo at its full size.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the layout or drag photos around?

No. The layout is always an automatic grid based on how many photos you add, and photos fill the cells in the order they were added. You can change only the gap size and which photos are included.

Why are my photos cropped?

Each photo is scaled until it fills a 400 by 400 square cell, and anything that overflows is cut off. Wide or tall photos lose some of their edges as a result. Crop beforehand if you need to control which part stays.

What format and file name do I get?

The download is always a PNG named collage.png. If you need a smaller file for the web, you can run it through the Image Format Converter and pick JPG or WebP.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The collage is drawn on a canvas in your browser, so the images stay on your device throughout.
