What flipping does to a picture

Flipping creates a mirror image. When you flip horizontally, the left side of the picture swaps with the right side, as if you were looking at it in a mirror. Nothing is rotated and nothing is resized: the width and height stay the same, and every pixel just lands on the opposite side of the vertical centre line.

Because pixels are moved rather than recalculated, a flip does not blur or soften the picture. Text inside the image will appear reversed afterwards, which is a handy clue when you check the result.

This tool performs a horizontal flip only, meaning a left to right mirror. It has no option for a top to bottom flip. If you need the picture upside down, a 180 degree turn with Rotate Image combined with a horizontal flip gives the same result as a vertical flip.

Why people flip images

Selfies taken with a front camera are sometimes saved mirrored, so text on a shirt or sign reads backwards. Flipping horizontally restores the real-life view.

Designers flip pictures to change which way a subject faces, so a person or product looks toward the text in a layout instead of away from it. Flipping is also common when preparing artwork for transfers or printing methods that need a reversed image, and when you want a second variation of a graphic without drawing it again.

Be careful with anything containing writing, logos or numbers. A mirrored logo is a changed logo, and signs, labels or documents will read backwards. Flip them only when that is truly the intent.

How to flip an image with this tool

  1. Drag an image onto the drop area, or click to browse for one.
  2. The Original appears on the left with its file name, size and dimensions.
  3. Click Flip horizontally. The mirrored version shows up on the right under Result, with a size comparison.
  4. Click Download to save it. The file name is your original name followed by -flip-h, and it keeps the original file type.
  5. Choose Start over to load another image.

There are no sliders or extra settings. The image is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

Limits and tips

Check the preview before downloading, especially for pictures that include text. If the text now reads backwards and it should not, you flipped something that did not need it.

Flipping works on the original file each time, so pressing the button again does not flip back; it produces the same flipped result. To undo it, simply keep your original file, which this tool never changes.

The output uses the same file type as your upload, so a JPG is re-encoded as a JPG. This can introduce a tiny quality change, though it is rarely visible. Only a single frame is drawn, so animated files will not stay animated.

To trim edges after flipping, use Crop Image.

Frequently asked questions

Can I flip vertically?

This tool offers only a horizontal (left to right) flip. A vertical flip can be achieved by rotating 180 degrees and then flipping horizontally.

Will the picture lose quality?

The flip moves pixels without resampling, so there is no blur. A JPG is saved again as a JPG, which can cause a very small quality change that is hard to see.

Does my image get uploaded?

No. The flip is done in your browser, so the image stays on your device.

Why is the text in my image backwards now?

That is what a mirror flip does to text. If the writing should read normally, do not flip the image, or flip the original again from the unflipped file.
