What a Twitter/X Card is

A Twitter Card, now shown on X, is a link preview built from <meta name="twitter:..."> tags in your page's HTML. When someone posts your URL, X reads those tags and displays a card with an image, a title and a short description instead of a plain link.

The most important tag is twitter:card, which picks the card layout. The value "summary" gives a small square-style thumbnail beside the text, while "summary_large_image" gives a wide image above it. The remaining tags supply the title, description and image.

X has a fallback: if its own tags are missing, it may use the matching Open Graph tags. That fallback is useful, but it is not something to rely on if the preview matters, because explicit tags are predictable. As with other preview tags, these have no direct effect on search rankings. They only shape how the link looks when posted.

When to set these tags yourself

Set them when the link you post shows a weak card, no image, or a title that differs from what you want people to read. This is common on hand-built pages, older templates and pages where an image is chosen automatically and picks something odd.

They are most useful on content you expect to be posted: articles, product launches, event pages and campaign landing pages. If you already have Open Graph tags that look right, you may not need separate Twitter tags, though having both avoids surprises.

How to use the Twitter Card Generator

  1. Enter the Title you want on the card.
  2. Add the Description, a sentence or two about the page.
  3. Enter the Image URL, an absolute link to the picture.
  4. The URL field is used for the preview shown on this page only. It does not appear in the generated Twitter tags.
  5. Check the preview card to see roughly how title, description and image sit together.
  6. Click Copy on the Generated tags box and paste the four lines into your page's <head>.

For the matching Open Graph tags, use the Open Graph Generator. If you want one block that covers both plus the search title, try the Meta Tag Generator.

What the output includes and leaves out

The generated block has four lines: twitter:card fixed to "summary_large_image", plus twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image. There is no option to choose the "summary" layout, and no fields for twitter:site, twitter:creator or image alt text. Add those by hand if you need them.

The preview on the page is a simplified sketch, not an exact copy of how X renders a post, which can differ by device and over time. Because image and text are pasted exactly as typed with no escaping, avoid double quotes in your title or description.

Image links must be public and absolute. If you update an image on a page that was already posted, X may keep showing the cached card for a while. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere by this tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between summary and summary_large_image?

"summary" shows a small thumbnail next to the text, while "summary_large_image" shows a wide image above it. This tool always outputs summary_large_image.

Does X use Open Graph tags if I skip the Twitter ones?

It can fall back to Open Graph tags when its own are missing. Setting the Twitter tags directly makes the result more predictable.

Will these tags make my page rank higher?

No. They only affect how your link looks when posted on X. They are not a search ranking factor.

Why does the URL field not appear in the tags?

Twitter Card markup does not need a URL tag, since X uses the page address it fetched. The field here only fills in the sample preview.
