Guide

What a MOV file is

MOV is the QuickTime container format created by Apple. Recordings from iPhones, iPads, and Macs often use it, and it can carry high-quality video with different kinds of audio and metadata. It works smoothly in Apple apps, but some Windows programs, web uploaders, and older devices handle it poorly.

A point worth knowing about this particular tool: although its name and short description speak of converting a MOV to MP4 or another common format, the code behind it is set to produce a file with a .mov extension. In other words, it packages whatever video you drop in into the MOV container, using ffmpeg's defaults for that container.

So it is best used to turn another video file into MOV, not to turn a MOV into MP4. For making an MP4, use the other tools described below.

When producing a MOV makes sense

Some editing software, especially in Apple-centered workflows, prefers or requires MOV files. If a colleague, client, or editing program asks for QuickTime format specifically, this tool can give you a file in that container from an MP4, AVI, WebM, or another video your browser lets you select.

It can also help when you want to hand a clip to a Mac user and know that their default player will open it without extra software.

If your actual goal is the opposite, to make an iPhone video work everywhere, you probably want MP4. The site's Video Converter is the better starting point for that, and AVI to MP4 covers old AVI files.

How to use the MOV converter

  1. Drag a video file onto the drop area, or click to select one. The picker accepts video files in general.
  2. Check the file name and size that appear. No extra options are shown for this tool.
  3. Click Run. The first run downloads the video engine, roughly 30MB, with a progress bar. Later runs reuse the cached engine.
  4. When processing finishes, a player previews the result. Some browsers cannot play every MOV, so a blank preview does not always mean failure.
  5. Click Download. The file name is your original name, then "-convert", then .mov, for example beach-convert.mov.

Click Start over if you want to choose a different file.

Limits and cautions

Processing happens in your browser through ffmpeg.wasm, so nothing is uploaded. That also means long or high-resolution recordings can be slow or may exhaust memory, and the tool will show a general error message when that happens.

You cannot select codec, quality, or resolution. The output is whatever ffmpeg produces by default for the MOV container, which may not match what a specific editing program expects. If a program still rejects the file, the codec inside may be the issue rather than the container.

A frequent mistake is dropping in a phone MOV and expecting an MP4 back. Check the name of the downloaded file: it should end in .mov. If you needed MP4, run the clip through a tool whose output is MP4 instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does this convert MOV to MP4?

Not according to the code. The tool is configured to output a .mov file, whatever you put in. To get an MP4, use a tool that outputs MP4, such as the Video Converter or AVI to MP4 for AVI sources.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Processing is done in your browser by ffmpeg.wasm, and the file is not sent to a server. Only the engine itself is downloaded on first use.

What will the downloaded file be named?

Your original file name, then -convert, then the .mov extension. A file called trip.mp4 becomes trip-convert.mov.
