What a search result snippet is made of

A search result usually shows three parts: a page title as a blue link, the address of the page, and a short description underneath. Search engines build the title from your title tag and the description from your meta description, although they sometimes rewrite either one to better match what a person searched for.

Both texts have limits. Titles that are too long get cut off, and descriptions that run on are shortened with an ellipsis. Because the cut-off is based on display width rather than a fixed count, no character number is exact, but commonly quoted guidelines are about 60 characters for the title and about 160 for the description.

Why preview a snippet before publishing

The snippet is often the first impression of your page. A title that ends mid-phrase, or a description that loses its call to action after the cut, can lower clicks even if the page ranks well. Seeing the text laid out as a result helps you catch these problems before they go live.

A preview is also useful for comparing options. You can try a shorter headline, move the important words to the front, or tighten the description, and see right away what remains visible. Related head tags, such as social sharing details, can be checked in the Open Graph Preview.

How to use the SERP preview tool

  1. Edit the Title, URL and Description fields on the left. They begin with sample text.
  2. Watch the counters beside the Title and Description labels. They show your current length out of 60 and 160 characters.
  3. Look at the Google preview panel on the right, which updates as you type and shows the three parts in a result-style layout.
  4. When the text reads well and fits, copy it into your page's title tag and meta description.

All of this runs in your browser. The tool does not load your page or send your text anywhere.

How accurate the preview is

The preview is an approximation. It cuts the title at exactly 60 characters and the description at exactly 160, without adding an ellipsis, and it shows the URL as you typed it. Real results measure width in pixels, so wide letters can truncate earlier and narrow ones later. Search engines may also pick a different title or description altogether.

The counters show your full text length even when it passes the limit, so a number above 60 or 160 means the preview is hiding the extra. Treat the guidance as a safe range, put key words early, and make each page's title and description different from the others.

Frequently asked questions

Is 60 characters a hard limit for titles?

No. Display depends on pixel width, so the real cut-off varies. This tool uses 60 characters as a practical guide and trims the preview at that point.

Will Google show exactly what I write here?

Not always. Search engines can rewrite titles and descriptions based on the query and page content, so the preview shows your intended snippet rather than a guarantee.

Does the tool read my live page?

No. You type or paste the text yourself, and the preview is built from those fields only.

Does the preview show mobile or desktop results?

It shows a single simplified layout and does not switch between device views. Use it to judge text length and wording rather than exact appearance.
