Guide

What this converter really does

Despite the name, this tool is a text extractor, not a full PDF to Word converter. It reads the text that is stored inside a PDF, gathers it page by page, and puts it into a new .docx file that you can open and edit.

A PDF stores each piece of text with an exact position on the page, but it usually has no concept of paragraphs, columns or tables. Rebuilding that structure is hard, and this tool does not attempt it. Within a page, the pieces of text are simply joined with spaces, and a blank line is added between pages. Everything in the output is plain paragraphs.

Not carried over: images, fonts, colors, headings, bullets, tables, columns, headers and footers, and the original page layout. If your PDF is a scan, meaning each page is a picture, there is no text inside to extract and you will get nothing back.

When extracting text is enough

Plain text is exactly what many people need. You might want to quote a passage from a report, reuse the wording of an old letter, pull the body of an article into an editor, or proofread a document without fighting the original layout.

It also helps when the PDF is mostly prose: meeting notes, essays, policy text or a book chapter. In those cases the loss of layout hardly matters, and you can restyle the text in Word in a few minutes.

It is a poor fit for forms, brochures, invoices, slide decks exported to PDF, or anything where columns and tables carry meaning. The text of a two-column page, for example, may come out in an order that mixes the columns, and a table will turn into a run of values without any grid.

How to turn a PDF into an editable .docx

  1. Drag a PDF onto the drop area, or click to choose one.
  2. The text is extracted in your browser and shown in an Extracted text box. Read through it.
  3. Edit the text right in the box if you want to fix errors or delete parts you do not need. Your changes are included in the download.
  4. Click Download as .docx. The file is named after your PDF with a .docx ending.
  5. Click Start over to load a different PDF.

Each line of the text becomes one paragraph in the Word file. Nothing is uploaded, because both the reading of the PDF and the creation of the .docx happen on your device. The same tool also serves the PDF to DOCX and PDF to Word pages.

Limits and what to try instead

If the extracted text box does not appear after you choose a file, the PDF probably has no embedded text or could not be read. Scanned documents are the usual cause. The PDF OCR tool is designed for recognizing text in page images.

Expect odd spacing or broken words in some files, because the order and spacing come from how the PDF was built. Skim the extracted text and tidy it in the box before downloading.

If you want a whole page as a picture rather than text, PDF to JPG exports each page as an image. Only extract text from documents you have the right to reuse, and remember that copying someone else's work is still bound by their rights even when it is technically easy.

Frequently asked questions

Does this keep the layout, images and tables?

No. It extracts plain text only. Images, fonts, colors, columns and tables are not carried into the .docx, and every line becomes a simple paragraph.

Why did I get no text from my PDF?

The PDF is most likely a scan, where each page is an image with no text inside. This tool cannot read images, so try an OCR tool instead.

Can I edit the text before downloading?

Yes. The extracted text appears in an editable box, and whatever is in the box when you click download is what goes into the Word file.

Is the PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The text is read and the .docx file is built entirely in your browser, so your document stays on your device.
