Job applications want "one PDF with your CV and certificates". Expense claims want every receipt in a single file. Teachers want all the chapters together. Merging PDFs is one of the most common document jobs there is, and you don't need paid software for it.
How to merge PDFs
- Open Merge PDF.
- Drop in two or more PDF files, or click to choose them. You can add more files at any time.
- Put them in order. The files are merged top to bottom as listed. Drag a file to move it, or use the bin icon to remove one you added by mistake.
- Click Merge PDFs.
- Download the result, saved as merged.pdf.
The files are combined in your browser, so they're never uploaded. That makes it suitable for contracts, ID documents and anything else personal.
What the merge keeps
Merging copies whole pages from each file into a new document, so the pages themselves come through unchanged:
- Text stays real, selectable text, and images stay at their original resolution
- Page sizes and orientations are kept, so a landscape page stays landscape
- Nothing is re-compressed, so quality doesn't drop
A few document-level extras don't carry over, because they belong to the original files rather than to individual pages: bookmarks (the outline sidebar), fillable form fields may stop being fillable, and digital signatures become invalid, since the document they signed has changed. If you need a signed document in the bundle, keep a separate copy of the original too.
Fixing the order and pages after merging
Merged everything and noticed a page in the wrong place, or one you don't want?
- Organize PDF lets you reorder pages.
- Delete Pages removes the ones you don't need.
- Split PDF pulls out a range if you only wanted part of a document.
If the merged file is too large
The merged file is roughly the sum of its parts, so a few scanned documents can push it past an email or upload limit (often 10 to 25 MB).
- Scans are the usual culprit. They store each page as a picture, which is why they're so much bigger than typed PDFs. Compress PDF can shrink them a lot.
- If you have photos of documents rather than PDFs, turn them into a PDF first with JPG to PDF, then merge.
Tips
- Name files before you start with numbers (
01-cover.pdf,02-cv.pdf) so they're easy to arrange. - Merge the final versions. A merged PDF is awkward to edit later, so finish each document first.
- Password-protected PDFs need unlocking before they can be merged.
Quick answers
Is there a limit on how many files I can merge? There's no fixed limit. Very large sets are limited by your device's memory, since the work happens in your browser.
Can I merge PDFs on my phone? Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers on Android and iPhone.
Will merging reduce the quality? No. Pages are copied as they are, without re-compressing anything.
