Guide

What does splitting a PDF actually do?

Splitting a PDF means taking a document apart and keeping only some of its pages. The pages you keep are copied into a brand new PDF, and the original file is left exactly as it was. Think of it as photocopying a few sheets out of a thick binder rather than tearing them out.

This tool works visually. Instead of asking you to type page ranges, it renders a thumbnail of every page so you can see what you are choosing. That matters when a document has no useful page labels, or when the page you want is "the one with the signature block" and you could not say its number from memory.

When you need to pull pages out of a PDF

The usual reason is that a file is bigger than the job requires. A 60-page contract where you only need to send the signed last page, a scanned book chapter you want to share without the rest, or a report where one section belongs to a different recipient.

It also helps with limits. Many upload forms and email systems cap attachment size or expect a single document per field. Sending just the relevant pages keeps the file small and avoids handing over content that was never meant for the other person.

If you would rather remove a few unwanted pages and keep everything else, the Delete Pages tool is the mirror image of this one.

How to split a PDF with this tool

  1. Drag a PDF onto the upload area, or click it to choose a file.
  2. Wait a moment while the tool reads the document and draws a numbered thumbnail for each page.
  3. Click each page you want to keep. Selected pages get a highlighted border. Click again to deselect.
  4. Press Extract selected pages.
  5. Press Download to save the result. The new file is named extract.pdf.

Everything happens in your browser using your own device. The PDF is not sent to a server.

Tips and limits to know about

Pages are written to the new file in their original order, not in the order you clicked them. If you need a different order, build the file here first and then rearrange it with Organize PDF.

The tool reads thumbnails for every page before it lets you choose, so a very long document takes longer to load than a short one. That wait scales with how big your file is and how fast your device is.

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs may fail to load, and the tool will show an error asking for a valid, unencrypted file. Also, if you press the extract button without selecting any page, the resulting file will simply be empty, so check your selection first. Rename the downloaded file right away if you plan to split the same document several times, otherwise the files all share the same default name.

Frequently asked questions

Does splitting change the original PDF?

No. The tool builds a separate new file from the pages you pick. Your original stays untouched on your device.

Can I split a PDF into several separate files at once?

Not in one go. Each run produces one new PDF containing the pages you selected. To make several files, run it again with a different selection.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The pages are read, previewed and rebuilt entirely inside your browser, so the document never leaves your device.
