Guide

What does adding page numbers to a PDF involve?

Page numbers are not a hidden property of a PDF. When you add them, a small piece of text is drawn onto each page at a fixed position. The numbering becomes part of the page, visible in any viewer and in print.

This tool stamps a plain number onto every page of your document, so a file that came from several sources, or a scan with no numbering at all, ends up with consistent labels.

Why numbered pages matter

Numbers make a document easier to reference. In a meeting, "turn to page 14" only works if page 14 is printed on the page. Legal bundles, submissions, manuals and printed reports all benefit, and so does any combined file where the original numbering broke.

A common workflow is to combine several files with Merge PDF and then number the result so the whole thing reads as one document. You can also set a starting number, which is useful when your PDF is a continuation of a longer document.

How to add page numbers with this tool

  1. Drag a PDF onto the upload area, or click to select it.
  2. Under Position, choose left, center or right. The number is always placed along the bottom of the page.
  3. In Start numbering at, type the number the first page should carry. The default is 1.
  4. Press Add page numbers.
  5. Press Download. The file is saved as numbered.pdf.

The work is done in your browser, and your file is not uploaded.

Limits and practical tips

The numbering style is fixed: a plain number in small grey Helvetica text near the bottom edge. There are no options for formats like "Page 3 of 10", Roman numerals, a different font or size, or skipping a cover page. Every page in the file gets a number.

If you want the cover to be unnumbered but the next page to read 1, a workaround is to split the cover off first with Split PDF, number the rest starting at 1, and keep the two files separate or merge them afterwards.

Because the number sits close to the bottom edge, check that it does not collide with a footer or a scanned page's border. Look at the result before you send it. Encrypted PDFs may fail to load, and an error will ask for a valid, unencrypted file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Type any number into the Start numbering at box and the first page will carry it, with the following pages counting up from there.

Can I put page numbers at the top?

No. The tool offers left, center and right positions along the bottom of the page only.

Can I skip the first page?

Not directly. Every page is numbered. You can split off the cover first, number the rest, and combine them again if needed.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The numbers are added in your browser and the file stays on your device.
