Owner restrictions versus an open password

PDF protection comes in two different forms, and they are easy to confuse. An open password (also called a user password) stops anyone from viewing the file at all until the password is entered. An owner password, by contrast, lets the file open normally but sets permissions, such as no printing, no copying text or no editing.

This tool deals only with the second kind. It rewrites a PDF that already opens without a password so that those permission flags are no longer applied.

When removing restrictions is appropriate

Sometimes a document you own or are allowed to use is locked from printing or copying, perhaps because a colleague set it years ago and nobody remembers the password. Or you have a form you are entitled to print and the permissions get in the way.

Use it only on files you have the right to modify. Restrictions are often placed deliberately by an author or organization, and removing them from someone else's work without permission may breach their terms or the law. This tool is for your own documents or files you are authorized to handle.

If you want to mark up a document once it is unlocked, Sign PDF lets you stamp a drawn signature onto a page.

How to remove restrictions with this tool

  1. Drag the restricted PDF onto the upload area, or click to choose it.
  2. Press Remove restrictions.
  3. When processing finishes, press Download. The new file keeps your original name with -unlocked added before the extension.
  4. Use Start over to load another file.

The work is done in your browser, so the PDF is not uploaded anywhere.

What this tool cannot do

It cannot open a PDF that requires a password to view, and it does not guess, crack or bypass open passwords. If the file needs a password just to open, the tool shows an error, and the only way forward is to get the password from whoever created the file.

It also works by re-saving the document, so the result is a new file rather than your original edited in place. Keep the original in case you need the protected version.

After unlocking, open the result and test the action that was blocked, such as printing, to confirm it worked. If you want to reduce the size of the unlocked file, Compress PDF is the next step, though note that it works by turning pages into images.

Frequently asked questions

Can this unlock a PDF that asks for a password when I open it?

No. It cannot crack or bypass an open password. You need the actual password from the person who set it.

Is it okay to use this on any PDF?

Only on files you own or have permission to modify. Restrictions are often set on purpose, and removing them from other people's work may not be permitted.

Does it upload my file?

No. The PDF is processed locally in your browser and never leaves your device.
